In Maine, you do not need a prescription to buy naloxone at a pharmacy. Instead, ask any Maine pharmacist how to get the nasal spray without a doctor’s prescription. Nasal spray naloxone can be up to $150 without insurance. Non-Mainecare patients can be prescribed naloxone by their healthcare provider. Mainecare patients prescribed opioids can ask to be prescribed naloxone, and insurance may then cover part of the cost.
Maine has an extensive network of community naloxone distributors that offer free nasal spray and injectable naloxone. These community partners dispersed over 55,700 doses of naloxone between October 2019 and November 2020. Because of high demand, these distributors prioritize naloxone distribution to drug users and their immediate relatives and friends. In addition, these distributors offer instruction and training on administering naloxone. Many of these distributors also provide education on overdose prevention.

Tier Two organizations can keep naloxone on hand in case of emergencies at their facility, as is the case with schools, some community organizations, and businesses, or if they are engaged with high-risk individuals as part of their community work, they can work as redistributors, dispensing their naloxone kits to end-users to facilitate the reversal of private overdoses in the community.
